Keytruda Is A Promising Treatment Option For Mesothelioma Patients

Mesothelioma is difficult to treat. Traditional treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Advancements in treatment are not often made. Those diagnosed with mesothelioma often feel limited in their treatment options.

But an immunotherapy drug is showing promising results for those diagnosed with mesothelioma as well as those diagnosed with lung cancer.

Keytruda (pembrolizumab) allows the immune system to work by blocking the protective mechanisms that are produced by cancer cells.

PD-1 is a protein that is formed in tumors in both lung cancer and mesothelioma patients. Among mesothelioma patients, 72.4% were found to have cells that overexpress PD-1. This is an issue because PD-1 blocks the immune system from detecting cancer cells.

Keytruda works by stopping PD-1 from forming. When combined with other drugs used to treat mesothelioma, many patients showed positive results both in survival and progression-free survival: 76 percent of patients responded, and approximately 25 percent experienced a reduction in tumor size.

Doctors are reacting positively to the results. And since Keytruda has already gained FDA approval, treatment does not have to be delayed.

Studies have shown the effectiveness of this drug when combined with other chemotherapy drugs for treating mesothelioma. In short, Keytruda allows the immune system to better do its job.

Mesothelioma patients: Talk to your doctor to find out if Keytruda is a good option for you.

Motion For New Trial Denied in Union Sugar Case

On October 24, 2017, attorneys for Hillshire Brands Co. failed to get a new trial in the Union Sugar plant asbestos case.

In August 2017, an Alameda County jury held Hillshire Brands Co. (now part of Tyson Foods) liable for the death of 61-year old Mark Lopez in 2015. The jury awarded $13 million to the family of the late Mr. Lopez, who contracted mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos in debris dumped near the plant.

Hillshire Brands Co. solely liable

This case is unusual in that Mark Lopez was never an employee of Union Sugar, nor did he work with asbestos, as do most victims of mesothelioma. Rather, he lived near the plant between 1954 and 1964 and regularly played on empty ground on which Union Sugar employees deposited pipe insulation containing asbestos. In addition, attorneys for the Lopez family asserted that Mark Lopez was exposed to asbestos on the clothing of his father who worked at the plant.

Hillshire’s attorneys attempted and failed to apportion liability to the manufacturers of the pipe insulation and other asbestos-containing debris dumped near the Union Sugar plant. These manufacturers included Johns-Manville, Fibreboard/Pabco, Anchor Packing and Garlock.

The Union Sugar litigation underscores the complexity of many mesothelioma cases. As this case indicates, significant compensation may be available for victims of mesothelioma and their families. They should speak with law firm that has the experience, knowledge and resources needed to prevail in asbestos-related litigation.

When Mesothelioma is Misdiagnosed

Mesothelioma is a serious type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. For those with the disease, an early diagnosis is key to having the best possible results in terms of treatment. However, mesothelioma can be hard to diagnose, especially in the beginning stages of the disease.

A doctor should be advised anytime a patient has been exposed to asbestos, even if that exposure occurred decades ago. It can take several decades after asbestos exposure for mesothelioma to develop.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed. Let’s take a look at one recent case where mesothelioma was not diagnosed even after the patient sought medical help twice.

A case of misdiagnosis

This year, an Australian woman came to the United States with her husband to travel along Route 66. Before the trip, she had been experiencing some health problems, including shortness of breath and chest pain.

When still in Australia, she visited her doctor, who ordered who to go to the hospital where an ultrasound was performed. She was instructed to double her medication and go home.

On her next visit, a day before her trip to the U.S., paramedics told her she may have pulled a muscle in her back.

Once she go to the United States, she could barely breathe. She sought medical help and found out that her chest cavity had filled with fluid and one of her lungs had collapsed. After surgery was performed to drain the fluid, a biopsy was performed, and it was discovered that she had mesothelioma.

The first two times she sought medical attention, doctors did not figure out that she had mesothelioma – even after she had notified them her brother had been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Since mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, it would not be surprising that both siblings had been exposed, and that that exposure would one day develop into an asbestos-related cancer.

Avoiding misdiagnosis of mesothelioma

When mesothelioma is diagnosed early, more treatment options may be available. For this reason and many others, an accurate and early diagnosis is crucial.

If you have been exposed to asbestos at some point in your life – or if a family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma – it is important to share this information with your doctor.

It is advisable to seek a second opinion when you are not comfortable with your diagnosis or when you don’t feel like your doctor is hearing your concerns. Your health is important, and you should feel empowered to seek a second opinion if your diagnosis does not seem accurate.

The Importance of Diet Following Cancer

A healthy diet can help prevent many types of cancer and other diseases. We all know the importance of eating a healthy diet – but for many, it takes a health scare to change eating habits. For others, a health scare doesn’t prompt a change in nutritional habits.

A study by Drexel University and Johns Hopkins University found that many cancer survivors are not following a diet that could help them avoid future cancer risk.

Researchers studied the diets of 53 adults who had survived one of three types of cancer: Breast cancer, prostate concert, and non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL). Participants were asked to document their dietary habits over three 24-hour periods.

Researchers analyzed their diets according to two different U.S. government-developed diet standards.

They found that participants were not prepared to follow diets that would decrease the risk of cancer recurrence in the future. Other findings included:

  • Participants had a lack of guidance in the area of nutrition following cancer
  • Participants had limited knowledge of how diet can reduce risk of cancer recurrence
  • Participants with the healthiest diets were found to be non-smoking women of average weight, who are many years past their cancer diagnosis

What type of diet is best for survivors of cancer? The Mayo Clinic recommends the following:

  • Eating at least 2.5 cups of fruits and vegetables a day
  • Eating a variety of healthy fats, such as those found in walnuts and fish
  • Eating proteins that are low in saturated fat, such as eggs, nuts, legumes, fish, and lean meats
  • Eating healthy sources of carbohydrates, including fruits and vegetables, legumes, and whole grains

Healthy eating is important at all stages of life – but it is perhaps most important when the body is fighting or recovering from a disease.

Be Aware of Mesothelioma Risk Factors, Know Where to Seek Support

We often are contacted by people who have been exposed to asbestos and are experiencing symptoms like a persistent cough, chest pain or difficulty breathing.

We let them know that we are here to help in the event they are diagnosed with cancer, including mesothelioma, but they need to go visit their doctor to investigate the cause of the problem.

There are many conditions that may cause such symptoms that span the spectrum from very minor, curable illnesses to grave forms of cancer. If the person suffering has been exposed to asbestos, the need to seek medical attention is imperative. You should be sure to mention any asbestos exposure you have with your doctor because asbestos-related cancer, including mesothelioma, often presents itself with these types of ailments. Catching cancer early tends to improve a patient’s treatment outcome.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that most often affects the lungs, but can also affect the heart, abdomen and testicles. Sadly, most people develop mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases decades after being exposed to asbestos. And many people only detect the cancer when it is at an advanced stage.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure, it is important that you act fast in seeking treatment and an experienced asbestos attorney so you and your family can seek compensation.

One of the biggest factors placing people at risk for Mesothelioma is repeated exposure to microscopic asbestos particles contained in various types of products, such as insulation, old floor tiles and other construction items. Merely being in close contact with another person who has been exposed to asbestos is also highly dangerous. Studies suggest there may be family history risks involved with this disease as well; those with family members who have Mesothelioma may be more prone to contracting the disease themselves.

When a South Carolina employer or other party has failed to disclose potential asbestos dangers and a person winds up victim to Mesothelioma or other illness, the law allows compensation for damages to be sought through the civil justice system. Third party testimony and medical evidence are often crucial components in asbestos litigation as each may help substantiate a particular claim. The process is often complicated and best undertaken alongside experienced representation.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Mesothelioma Victims?

A mesothelioma diagnosis usually comes as a shock to the victim and family members. One of the first questions patients have is regarding treatment options.

These options may vary depending on many factors: What stage the cancer is at, whether the cancer is malignant mesothelioma, whether the cancer has spread, etc.

According to the National Cancer Institute, standard treatment options for mesothelioma include:

  • Surgery: Surgical options vary depending on many factors
  • Radiation: Radiation therapy may be administered externally or internally
  • Chemotherapy: A treatment used to kill cancer cells or stop them from dividing
  • Targeted therapy: The use of drugs to target specific cancer cells

Patients should discuss treatment options with their doctor. A combination of treatment therapies may be administered.

In addition to these treatment options, patients may wish to discuss the possibility of participating in a clinical trial. Advancements are being made in the treatment of mesothelioma. Patients may have the opportunity to participate in a trial that could help others in the future.

Mesothelioma is a rare and serious form of cancer, but many patients are living longer because of advancements in treatment.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should discuss all treatment options with your doctor. To schedule a free consultation with an attorney to learn about your legal options, please call 843-410-3956.

Mesothelioma is More Than Just a Commercial

How many times have you heard a mesothelioma commercial on TV? They often start out with, “If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma…

Most people don’t stop to think about these commercials, or mesothelioma, for that matter. Understandably, most people aren’t forced to think about mesothelioma until receiving a diagnosis.

But maybe these commercials leave more of an impact than we realize.

In a recent interview, professional tennis player Naomi Osaka recently said that she couldn’t get a mesothelioma commercial out of her head during a practice session. “[Mesothelioma was] all I could think about for the whole practice. I was, like, why do I keep thinking about this?”

How much do you know about mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma: The Facts

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Most often, it affects the lining of the lungs. But it can affect other areas of the body as well.

It can take decades for mesothelioma to develop. Individuals who were exposed to asbestos at work 30 or 40 years ago may be shocked when they receive a mesothelioma diagnosis.

In decades past, construction workers, ship builders, railroad workers, auto mechanics, miners, and oil refinery workers had an especially high risk of being exposed to asbestos on the job. Currently, in the United States, construction workers are most likely to be exposed to asbestos on the job.

Individuals who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma have legal options and may be entitled to compensation. It is advisable to speak to an attorney about your specific options. An attorney can help you identify where your asbestos exposure occurred and help you explore your legal options.

A Reminder to Review our Mesothelioma Patient Guide

The diagnosis is mesothelioma and not COPD or pneumonia after persistent flu-like systems would not go away. What happens now? Recently, we wrote some resources (a white paper and slide share summary) for patients and families facing this situation. They answer the below questions and more.

What causes mesothelioma? The only definitive one is asbestos exposure. Asbestos fibers are uniquely able to get past your body’s defense mechanisms because of their long, thin structure. The fibers lodge in tissues where they can cause scarring and eventually cause cancer to develop.

When over your career were you exposed? This is often the tough question to answer. A work history using various records along with interviews with co-workers and family can effectively put the pieces together to answer the where and when. What many may not recognize is that short-term exposure years ago or secondhand contact while laundering uniforms may be enough.

Reckless, negligent or knowing exposure

The law holds manufacturers responsible when they produce unreasonably dangerous products. But how do you put the law into action and get needed compensation to pay for expensive medical bills and protect your family

We recently wrote a white paper that is a comprehensive starting point for families: “Putting Together the Pieces: A Guide for Mesothelioma Patients and Their Families.” Peace of mind often comes from finding the right resources to help you through the process.

Your family focus will shift to finding the right medical care, but you cannot neglect to ask questions about your legal rights. Monetary compensation may be available depending on your situation.

Several Combined Treatments May Help Mesothelioma Patients

Trying to achieve as high quality a life as possible when suffering from a chronic, adverse health condition is a challenge that may seem insurmountable at times. Even if one is not directly affected but is a primary caretaker of a South Carolina loved one who is, life may never be the same. Where certain conditions are concerned, such as mesothelioma, there is no known cure, the knowledge of which often adds to the stress of a particular situation.

Diagnosing mesothelioma often involves chest x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography scanning. If this dreaded disease was contracted on the job, it can be difficult to get the care needed and the benefits to which one may be entitled. Knowing there are new treatment options available may be provide much needed encouragement and support.

The main types of treatment in a multifaceted approach include chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Doctors typically pursue three types of staging systems to determine which treatment is most viable for a particular patient; it may be one or several. How advanced the disease has become, as well as the overall health condition of the patient are also pertinent factors.

When dealing with a chronic illness for which there is no known cure, it’s understandable for one to take advantage of any and all options that may help  improve one’s condition as much as possible. It’s well known that emotional conditions affect physical health; being stressed out over complications with a workers’ compensation claim or other factor of  illness related to an employer may exacerbate illness symptoms. Many South Carolina mesothelioma patients or their caretakers have reached out for support by turning to experienced attorneys for help.
